Money Changers in Bali ATM and Western Union
Back to Bali Travel Tips
First of all, everybody says, change you money to rupiah's in Bali, you get a better rate. In some countries its difficult to get Indonesian rupiah anyway.
Bali has plenty of ATM's, its not difficult to get your rupiah's there. When you arrive on the airport, they are just outside. There may be a maximum you can take from an ATM in one day, and exchange rates depend on your bank.
Credit cards are accepted in a lot of shops in the tourist centers, like Kuta. Usually shops have a surcharge when paying with a credit card. Take a bit of precaution when paying with a credit card, don't let your card out of sight. Some ATM's also accept credit card's, so you can take money, but my guess is that rates and costs are not as good as with an ordinary ATM bank card.
The well know currencies ar are easily changed in Bali, EURO, US Dollars, Australian Dollars, Japanese Yen etc, no problem at all.
There have been reports of Money Changer Scams, so you have to take care. The scams usually are pretty smart, don't think it cannot happen to you. Don't accept smaller bills then 50.000 (5 USD) or 100.000 rupiah (10 USD)...
Money changers that have been reported as reliable are the Wartels (Warung with Telephone services) and PT Cental Kuta, they have an office on the airport just after you have cleared customs, and offices in various other places.
Important: the money you want to change has to be in excellent condition; dirty, torn, stamped bills, or bills with writing on them are not accepted.
Western Union checks can be picked from most banks in Bali, and even at the post office.
Tipping is not nescesary, but appreciated, 10% will do....
And when you have changed you money, you usually are a millionaire right away!
