Helen Flavel Foundation Update

Back to Bali News Overview

Publication date of Helen Flavel Foundation Update : November 23, 2005

Covering September and October 2005

At the moment there are boys and girls waiting to be sponsored. We have already paid for their school fees for this year and as of yesterday there are 241 children under our care, and your sponsorship.

In the last month, we have arranged for two rooves to go on homes, before the wet season. We found one family living in a shell of a house with no roof, windows or even a door. They had to shelter with the cows when it rained.

A birthday gift to one of our sponsors from her husband, paid for half of a new roof. The other half of the roof was funded by a supporter of the foundation. This was done in memory of a dear friend who had just died. This family now have a roof on their house. We are also putting in floors, tiles, windows and a door.

The other roof totally disappeared in a strong wind. By the end of this week, we will have the new roof completed.

One small piece of land has been purchased to build a house for another family. This family have been living in the appalling conditions. The land has been paid for by the children's sponsors, who donated the funds.

We have also found the funds to build a house for a family, who have been living in what is little more than a shelter for the cows. Recently the family has been told that their landlord needs the home for his son. We will move as fast as possible to complete the home in the next month or so.

We heard about a young mother who had accidentally burned herself with boiling water. I was stunned to see how much discomfort this woman was in. >From her waist to her knees, she has sustained severe burns and blistering which had become badly infected. She had no money and no transport, so she had not seen a doctor. We acted immediately and arranged for medical attention. Our ?patient? is well on the way to recovery now.

We also arranged for an operation for a man who has been ill with a twisted stomach hernia. He has been unable to work for 4 years because of the severe pain. He had no money for this operation. His wife works as an unskilled labourer sweeping the roads, to support the family. We finally found the funds to help.

Today is a very good day for our team, the operation was a success. In a few weeks time he will be back at work. The standard of living for his family will improve with the extra income coming in. It?s a good feeling to know that this man is now free from this debilitating illness.

Everything we do has been made possible by the generous donations sent to the foundation over the year, and from our sponsors wishing to help the families of the children they sponsor. Our sponsors make all these things happen, without their generosity, it would not be possible to give this extra help.

The learning centre is coming a long well. The top floor was poured 2 weeks ago. 110 men, women and students spent from 6am until 11pm on the day of the pour. Some worked in the kitchen keeping the food flowing all day, while others carried water, mixed, poured or laid cement. It was a long day for everyone. We only had to pay for 10 workers. All the others gave up a day?s pay to come and help. The revised date of completion is the end of December.

We are delighted to announce that the Principal of the Sukma Helen Flavel Foundation Learning Centre has been awarded her PhD in education, (cum laude) two weeks ago. We are very proud of Dr Padmadewi, who is a dedicated educator.

We are making a difference to the lives of many people in Bali. We guarantee that every dollar we receive, goes to help these people and not to us. We (Ron and I) happily cover all costs involved in running the Peduli Sesame Helen Flavel Foundation.

Bali is a true paradise filled with beautiful beaches, rainforests, and river valleys. Equally as beautiful as the natural surroundings are the numerous temples, open-air theatres and holy sites that sprinkle the island.
